Mental health has been overlooked for far too long as a crucial part of comprehensive cancer care. The evidence couldn’t be clearer—patients who receive mental health support are more likely to survive their cancer. Yet, healthcare systems that fail to provide access to these services are letting patients down. This has to change.
That’s why TeleMedicX is stepping up to transform the way we approach mental health care. We’re developing a FREE app to bridge the gap for those who need mental health support but don’t have physical or financial access. Starting in Hawaii—where mental health care has been struggling to keep up—the TeleMedicX app is designed to reach people who need it most.
But we’re not stopping there. Once launched, this app will be ready to tackle the global mental health crisis, ensuring people everywhere get the support they deserve. Together, we can make mental health care accessible to all and change lives for the better.

The impact of mental health on cancer patient outcomes is real. Approximately 30-40% of cancer patients experience significant depression or anxiety when faced with a cancer diagnosis, making it difficult for them to adhere to their treatment plans, ultimately increasing their risk of mortality.
Conversely, patients receiving mental healthcare are more likely to complete treatment regimens, leading to better outcomes. A study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology found that cancer patients undergoing psychosocial interventions were 25% more likely to adhere to chemotherapy schedules. According to a report from the American Cancer Society, mental health support correlates with improved survival rates in breast and lung cancers. Plus, counseling and stress management helps reduce symptoms like pain, fatigue, nausea, often exacerbated by psychological stress.
From a societal perspective, improved mental health reduces emergency department visits and hospital stays, lowering healthcare costs. Mental health support for cancer patients isn’t just about emotional relief, it directly impacts physical health, treatment success and long-term survival. While mental health care is a critical component of comprehensive cancer treatment, not all patients can readily access this type of support due to a combination of geographical, systemic and cultural factors.
In Hawaii, for example, the outer islands like Molokai and Lanai, lack sufficient healthcare infrastructure. Patients have to travel far to Oahu where specialty care is concentrated. The high cost and time required for inter-island travel makes this logistically difficult. Not to mention, Hawaii has one of the lowest ratios of mental health professionals per capita.
TeleMedicX is a Hawaii-based digital health tech company with a solution. Their VirtualCliniX platform can streamline access to mental health resources as part of the existing telehealth system. By integrating teleconferencing, automated scheduling and HIPAA-compliant record sharing, TelemediX enables patients to have immediate remote mental health consultations, reducing the time cancer patients need to wait to speak with specialists. This automated process simplifies referrals, improves communication and reduces the chance of lost or delayed appointments. Plus, specialized care navigation tools that incorporate precision medicine features can support patients with rare or unique conditions alongside their mental health care.
The next critical product development milestone is to complete the development and deployment of the TeleMedicX app and support platform. This will involve:
The app will also be outfitted with a range of capabilities to build community support groups, physiotherapy services, nutrition and diet planning, mindfulness tools as well as financial and educational support.
Funds will be deployed in the following breakdown:
TeleMedicX has received funding and support from several notable organizations. A key partnership is with the Hawaii State Rural Health Association, which has contributed over $100k in revenue, showcasing the platform’s success in addressing rural healthcare challenges. Additionally, TeleMedicX collaborates with the University of Hawaii, utilizing software initially developed for their use, which now serves psychologists and healthcare providers statewide. We are working on future engagement and exploring partnerships with Queen’s Health System, Straub, Kaiser Permanente, and other healthcare organizations to advance access to care. These potential collaborations highlight our commitment to enhancing comprehensive healthcare delivery through telehealth solutions tailored to Hawaii’s unique needs, which can be applied to remote areas worldwide.
Today, mental health care for cancer patients is often managed through traditional in-person counseling, medication and support groups. Unfortunately, for many patients lack of access to consistent mental health care hurts their chances of surviving cancer. There are few systems in place to proactively address the psychological impact of cancer, such as anxiety, depression and stress from dealing with cancer treatment and long-term side effects. These problems are particularly acute for patients who are geographically, logistically and financially challenged.
TeleMedicX wants to change this by applying telehealth as a holistic approach to cancer care. Our platform’s ability to connect cancer patients with mental health providers quickly and securely will improve adherence to treatment regimens, reduce stress and enhance survival. We are uniquely positioned to address the logistical and psychological needs of patients that will not only help patients survive cancer, but will reduce the cost and burden of cancer to society.
