Texas-based Indie-rock musician Mark Winters is many things; a soulful songwriter, a witty poet, passionate musician, an entrepreneur, an optimist, a family man and a bonafide rocket scientist!

1. What was your original calling to music? How did you start?

I first picked up a guitar to play a song for my wife for our anniversary.  I found the journey learning music fascinating, and the feeling if singing live to her made me fall in love (again with her!) and music.  I became obsessed with writing and sharing music to make the world a brighter better place.

2. Who or what is your musical inspiration? Which artist(s) do you look up to? Did any of them inspire you to experiment with your music? Is there something new you’d like to try?

I have always been moved by emotional music, from Pavoriti to Eric Claption and Morgan Whalen.  My biggest influences as a writer have been John Mayer (I love his guitar hooks and inspirational music), Tom Petty (very relatable simple tunes that captivate us all) and Jason Mraz (his quirky melodic and groove oriented acoustic tunes).  I have been playing recently in a trio, learning to sing harmonies with the amazing Rochelle Gomes and am experimenting with writing songs with our trio in mind (Michael Shanks is the third, a very cool guitarist and producer).

3. Why did you become involved with Music Beats Cancer? Has cancer directly or indirectly affected you?

Yes, my grandmother had Lymphatic Cancer and had the access to innovative treatments that put her in remission for 30 years.  She was so influential in my life, teaching me poetry when I was 5, water color painting and the love of nature.  30 years of her guidance was a blessing, and only possible with research like Music Beats Cancer is enabling.  I am also a volunteer for our TMC Innovations program in Houston, and see the struggles scientists face obtaining funding to explore innovation in cancer therapeutics.

4. What is happening next in your music career?

I have a few singles releasing (7 Deadly Moods released 1 week ago!) and an EP early 2024.  I’m planning a summer tour and have some great performance opportunties in the Texas regional area.

5. Anything else you would like Music Beats Cancer readers to know about you?

I love the world and the people I get to meet in it.  I hope my music and journey inspires you to make some positive vibes happen with your friends and family!
