Music Beats Cancer: Beyoncé

Music Beats Cancer

There aren’t many performers in the music industry that enjoy the kind of status and public adoration that Beyoncé does. Ever since the late 90s when Destiny’s Child started ruling the pop charts, this amazing lady has remained consistent in the industry, earning her legendary status with time.

Beyoncé Knowles-Carter is the most nominated woman in the history of Grammy Awards, and she’s won 22 of them during her fruitful career. She has 7 solo albums, 5 albums with Destiny’s Child and many collaborations with other significant artists. However, she hasn’t only impacted the music industry: Beyoncé’s philanthropic activities are well-known and respected.

This passionate lady has led Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Ike relief efforts, founding the Survivor Foundation to provide housing for those affected in her hometown of Houston. She was also a part of George Clooney’s telethon to raise funds for helping the victims of the Haiti earthquake in 2010. It was the most widely distributed telethon to date, raising over $60 million.

However, disaster relief isn’t the only cause Beyoncé has supported — her work includes helping at-risk and disadvantaged youths, as well as aiding conservation, fighting addiction, cancer, hunger, slavery, and human trafficking. The list of charities and foundations she has supported is quite long, and it includes American Foundation for AIDS Research, Keep A Child Alive, Stand Up To Cancer, Feeding America and many more. She also co-founded Chime for Change, which is a platform dedicated to empowering women by helping girls get proper education and health care.

Most recently, Beyoncé partnered with City of Hope, a treatment center for cancer, diabetes and other life-threatening diseases, to raise funds to battle cancer. During its 45 years of existence, City of Hope has raised more than $115 million to fight life-threatening illnesses. Among other reasons, Beyoncé and her husband Jay-Z attended the charity gala to support Jon Platt, the Warner/Chappell Music Publishing CEO, after their The Run II tour ended. Jay-Z presented Platt with the Spirit of Life award during the charity event that took place in October 2018. Other notable recipients of the award were Mo Ostin, Clive Davis, Irving Azoff and Quincy Jones.

Beyoncé took the stage to sing one of her hits, “Halo,” and her version of “Ave Maria” left those in attendance speechless. The efforts of the Carters ended up raising approximately $6 million for the City of Hope. Beyoncé’s homage to the music executive during this charity event made the headlines and gathered hundreds of thousands of views on Youtube, raising awareness of what the charity does.

Among the celebrities that use their fame and fortune to help other people, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter stands out, both in popularity and the amount of work she puts into charity. Beyoncé has donated many songs and music videos to different causes, and her positivity is a testament that the battle against cancer is won through numerous means, including music and philanthropy. As such, Beyoncé is one of the stars that will always be loved by the public, and she remains a force of positive change in our society regarding cancer.
